Fórsa statement on arson attack affecting Ryanair cabin crew

Fórsa has expressed deep concern for its members among Ryanair cabin crew who were affected by yesterday’s arson attack on accommodation in Swords, County Dublin.

The incident, in which a number of houses occupied by crew were targeted, represents a shocking and serious threat to the safety and wellbeing of workers. Many of those affected were present at the time and have understandably been left distressed and shaken by the experience.

Fórsa is engaging directly with Ryanair management and has called for an immediate and comprehensive response that reflects the company’s duty of care to these workers, both as their employer and as their landlord.

Nicola Coleman, Fórsa assistant general secretary, met affected members on site yesterday and said it was clear that many individuals are experiencing trauma and may require professional support. Fórsa has sought full details of counselling and employee assistance services to ensure all impacted workers are aware of and can access these supports without delay.

Fórsa national secretary Hazel Nolan added: “Fórsa has raised serious concerns regarding ongoing safety risks. Given the targeted nature of the attack, the absence of an arrest, and the lack of clarity around motive, Fórsa believes there is a continuing potential risk to those residing in the affected properties.”

The union has written to Ryanair seeking a full risk assessment and to implement enhanced security measures, including a visible 24-hour security presence, to ensure the immediate safety of all residents.

In addition, the union has requested that Fórsa workplace representatives be released from normal duties to support members on the ground during this period.

Fórsa is to raise its concerns directly with An Garda Síochána, in order to ensure a coordinated response to this serious incident.

Fórsa continues to support those cabin crew members affected and will work to ensure that all necessary measures are taken to safeguard their wellbeing in the aftermath of this attack.
