Fórsa has urged its members to support the ‘global climate strike’ demonstrations in support of action on climate change, which will take place this Friday (20th September). The union has called on its 80,000 members to support planned lunchtime protests in over 60 towns and cities, including major events in Cork and Dublin.

Climate change is the biggest threat we face, and Fórsa is proud to get behind the demand of young people in Ireland and across the globe who insist on immediate action to stop the destruction of our planet and the eradication of their future.

The ‘global climate strike,’ which has been spearheaded by the Irish and international students behind earlier school strikes for climate action, will see demonstrations and other initiatives around the country in what the organisers expect to be the largest ever worldwide mobilisation for action on the climate crisis. Climate activists have called on trade unions to support the campaign.

Fórsa’s campaigns director Joe O’Connor said: “Climate change is the biggest threat we face, and Fórsa is proud to get behind the demand of young people in Ireland and across the globe who insist on immediate action to stop the destruction of our planet and the eradication of their future. This is an urgent issue that affects everyone in every corner of the globe. That’s why we’re encouraging all our members to join in the demonstrations, or to organise a workplace action if they can’t get to a protest.”

We’re encouraging all our members to join in the demonstrations, or to organise a workplace action if they can’t get to a protest.

Although they use the word ‘strike’ to describe the day of action, the organisers here and abroad explicitly acknowledge that many workers are not able to take formal strike action for legal or other reasons. This is the situation in Ireland, where the law precludes industrial action unless it relates to a ‘trade dispute’ between an employer and its employees. Fórsa has responded to the organisers’ call for workers in such circumstances to add their voice to the demand for climate action in other ways.

The union wrote to its branches in August asking activists to support members who want to join lunchtime demonstrations. It also issued a call to action to all members in its fortnightly ebulletin last week.
